VH1’s “I’m Married to a…” is Strangely Intriguing

If you ever find yourself wanting to observe a couple that will make you feel better about being boring and normal and perhaps, single, you should watch VH1’s “I’m Married to A…”

We were sitting around watching TV the other night and stumbled upon this show. The episode we caught was about women who are married to men who have sex with other men for money. VH1 describes this show as “a glimpse into unusual partnerships”. We call this show outrageously provocative and an awesome rationale to remain untethered!

The wives featured in this episode seemed truly sad in their situations, that part was hard to watch. Otherwise, the men seemed pretty stoked about having sex for money and argued that just because they have sex with men doesn’t make them gay. Huh?

From the website it looks like only two episodes have been released, so perhaps this show won’t survive the airwaves. But for now, check it out while you can. It will make you feel really awesome about not being on the show.

Psycho (Suit) Killer

I got together with a girl I met on OkCupid for a drink. She seemed cool and normal at first and I was rather enjoying her company. After about 15 minutes of conversation, she tells me she has a confession. The girl proceeds to tell me about her most recent relationship which ended two weeks ago.

She met her last boyfriend on OkCupid and the guy told her he loved her at the end of their first date and said that he wanted to marry her. She said she didn’t really like the guy but decided to pity date him (didn’t know there was such a thing) because she felt bad for him. After their second date, he gave her a key to his apartment and they proceeded to hang out every night for the next three weeks. They were supposed to get together one night for dinner and the guy stood her up and ignored her calls. He disappeared for two days and then called her out of the blue telling her that he was now getting back with his his ex-girlfriend and needed his key back. Furious, my date went to the guys house, went into his closet and ripped up all of his suits with a pair of scissors.

After my date told me this story she asked me if I would ever stand her up. I replied, of course not, what do you think I’m psycho? She replied that I seemed pretty normal which is great because she tended to date crazy people.

“It’s a good thing I’m normal,” I said, as I quickly tried to think of an excuse to eject myself before my suits came under threat.

Needless to say there was no second date.

Grindr Gone Wrong- A Look at What Can Go Wrong with GPS Hookup Apps

I’m not quite sure why I continue to use phone applications as legitimate social spaces with no rules.

The bullshitter in myself creates the idea- and I suspect others do, as well- that these are “suitable” places to meet “intriguing” people, and have “interesting” experiences. It’s sort of a self-conscious lie of the internet age – as if we’re some wild children breaking down social norms to meet people online (“omg! what if they’re creeps? you’re so crazy!”) and have sloppy bathroom stall hook-ups and/or awkward and expensive dinners at dumb tapas restaurants. I fucking hate tapas.

Anyway, the other evening was a terrorizing nail in the coffin for this narrative. I was having a drink at a local dive, with one of my girls. We were cruising moderately – I was a bit uninterested – and half-heartedly dancing to Blondie. As a principle, I do not access these GPS hook up sites while at bars. I mean, that’s just laziness and I am not too invested in online-to-real life encounters. I’d rather have them come from cringe worthy, long nights at bars- that’s correct and the old-fashioned way, right? So yes, I tease a lot. Anyway, this quiet night was about to be disrupted by the massive social media shitshow brewing. I look to my right, and I see my ex-boyfriend, his friend (who made a distasteful move on me in the past), and his other ex-boyfriend walk in. Continue reading

Trader Joe’s Missed Connection Gem

Craigslist personals offer hilarious reads in the sections “missed connections” and “casual encounters”. I read them for fun sometimes, not going to lie. “Missed connections” you can read hoping you’ll find a post about you. “Casual encounters” tends to be more profane. Here is a post I found recently on Los Angeles Craigslist “missed connections” that made me laugh out loud. Enticed? Continue reading
